The earliest settlers of Pedong known so far are the Lepcha community. In fact, the whole of the Sikkim and Darjeeling hills is known as the “Land of the Lepchas”.
These were people who lived a very simple life and were originally animists and worshipped all forms of nature.
After the Lepchas came the people from the kingdom of Bhutan. The areas of Pedong, Kalimpong and Darjeeling originally belonged to the kingdom of Sikkim. But at the beginning of the eighteenth century, i.e. as early as 1699 AD to 1701 AD these parts were annexed by the Bhutanese when the Sikkimese had suddenly lost their ruler, King Tensung Namgyal, the second consecrated ruler of the Lepcha country. In fact, the Bhutanese had annexed the whole of Sikkim. Later however, they had to return the kingdom but they never returned the parts of Pedong, Kalimpong and Darjeeling.
